Instead of the usual four-wheel action known as motorsport, the two manufacturers best known for their sports cars are apparently in a legal feud. As you might have heard, Jaguar Land Rover, the corporation owned by the Indians at Tata Motors, is interested in buying the famous racing track.
Porsche, on the other hand, organizes events on the circuit, and has a contract with a veto clause that allows the German manufacturer to block competitor automakers from using the track for more than 45 days a year. Porsche’s contract is signed with the current owner of the Silverstone Circuit, the British Racing Drivers Club.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Porsche has called upon its veto right to stop the sale of the famous circuit. The news comes from The Telegraph, which has quoted a senior member of the British Racing Drivers Club, also known as BRDC.
The same unnamed source declares that Jaguar was familiar with Porsche’s contract, but had hoped that it could settle things with Porsche after the deal was completed.
Unfortunately for Jaguar Land Rover, it appears that Porsche has indicated the BRDC that it is not ready to waive its rights agreed upon in the lease contract. When inquired by The Telegraph, the representatives of the German brand refused to confirm or deny any details regarding private contracts.
However, the spokesperson has stated that the automaker shares a goal with the BRDC, and wants to see Silverstone and the local community around it thrive.
Meanwhile, a Jaguar Land Rover spokesperson has stated that the company remains committed to long-term sustainable growth in the United Kingdom, and that it continues its discussion with the British Racing Drivers Club. The Jaguar representative also stated that all discussions remain confidential, and that the corporation has no details to share at this point.
No matter which automaker will gain the exclusive right to the Silverstone track, it is still in the cards to organize Formula 1 races. We would kindly suggest a contest on the famous British circuit between the two rival brands as a better way to settle their differences. Solicitors need not apply.
