Porsche 918 Spyder, Now Available for EUR645,000

The biggest piece of news we can bring to your attention right now is the fact that sales of the 918 Spyder super sports car, with its innovative plug-in hybrid drive, will start today. Porsche says that production development for the road-going version of the concept we saw at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show is “proceeding apace”.

If you fancy driving your own hybrid supercar, we have bad news, as the official price is €645,000, not including VAT and country-specific charges. Still, if you have that kind of money to spend, than you might enjoy a lot of exclusivity with your purchase.

There will only ever be 918 units of the... 918 Spyder, with production “initialized in the same sequence in which orders are received”. Assembly of the car is scheduled to start in September 18th, 2013, “in a quasi manufacturing operation at Porsche’s main plant in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen.” The first customers will receive their cars just two months after that, in November 2013.

The 918 Spyder is powered by unique type of plug-in hybrid system, which comprises a high-revving V8 engine with a displacement of over four litres and output of more than 368 kW (500 hp), plus two electric motors with a combined output of at least 160 kW (218 hp). Power delivery to the rear wheels is handled by a compact, seven gear double-clutch PDK transmission. This is aided by the two electric motors, one each for the front and rear, making this a four-wheel drive car.

The 3.2-second time it takes for the car to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standing start and the more than 320 km/h (199 mph) top speed are truly impressive. What’s more, the car can be driven at 150 km/h (94 mph) on purely electric power. Equally important is the anticipated fuel consumption of 3.0 l/100 km (94 mpg).
