Last time we met the prototypes for the new 991 generation of the Porsche 911 Targa, the development pedal was being pushed to the metal, but it looks like Porsche might not release a new Targa after all. A company insider told autoevolution that the carmaker is considering selling the new glass roof model as a special Carrera rather than a Targa.
We believe this is due to the fact that the public awareness for the Taga concept is falling short of Porsche's expectations. Thus, Porsche could make the model more profitable if this becomes some sort of an option for the Carrera, which is a very popular model. Of course, the various engine (standard and S), as well as traction (rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive) possibilities will still be there, as they are all present on the Carrera models.

Regardless of that, Porsche is expected to use a new setup for the roof, one that will mark the return of the central rollbar from the original Targa built in the 60s’.The 991 generation of the 911 Targa should be introduced in the first half of 2013 and we’ve used the rendering above to allow you to get an idea of what it will look like.
