When we first saw the all-new Renault Clio we were very pleasantly surprised by its styling, and since the French manufacturer had not quite gotten the styling job right with the four-door Megane, we had good reason to be worried. Thankfully, all our fears were put to rest when we first saw its gleaming red paint finish, chosen by Renault to exude passion and ‘latin spirit’.
However, unlike some of their cars, which change drastically from generation to generation (see the history of the Megane), you can immediately tell that this is a Clio, as its roots to have clearly not been lost. The large headlights hint at its predecessor, while the bold lines and creases let you know that it is a new and very modern automobile. We particularly like the rear, with its wide flanks and slim lights, it looks great. We also appreciate the disappearance of the rear door handles, and we say the Clio is one of the only cars to truly pull off the ‘fake coupe’ act successfully.

Now, aside from the hot RS model, we say the highlight of the Clio range is the new 900cc turbocharged petrol engine, the TCe 90, which offers, as its name suggests, 90 hp, and a very wide spread of torque. We hope to get a chance to drive it soon to cast the final verdict, and to see whether or not its great styling is matched by equally-impressive ride and handling characteristics.
