Illegal taxis are a big problem in most of the world’s countries, but in China, it is a widespread and very difficult to control phenomenon. In the Chinese city of Hefei, in the Anhui province, a city of 5.7-million inhabitants, some 156 illegal taxis were recently destroyed. However, they were not simply taken to the junkyard and crushed, but rather left at the hands of the angry legal taxi drivers, police officers and city workers.
People used axes, bats, crowbars and even their bare hands to rip through the illegal taxis. However, after the angry mob blows off the steam, a professional recycling team steps in to gather what’s left in a more orderly fashion. We really think this is a great initiative and it seems that China is really the kind of place where examples need to be set from time to time to keep everything going smoothly. Surely some of the illegal taxi drivers will undoubtedly try a repeat offense, but this action is guaranteed to deter most of them.

These illegal taxis are usually unsafe and badly repaired cars with meters that overcharge, so they are a real nuisance for everybody from their passengers to the police and the other drivers. The city of Hefei is now a better and more pleasant place to live now that they are gone.
