Opel Debuts LPG Corsa, Meriva, Astra Station Wagon

While the company is still fighting for survival and tries to find another investor to keep it alive, Opel continues normal marketing and today debuted five new LPG models which are obviously aimed at reducing emissions and improving efficiency. The five cars, two Corsas, Meriva, Astra Station Wagon and Zafira, can run on either gasoline or LPG, with the switch done automatically via a button near the dashboard.

Each of these cars come with an LPG tank located either in the spare-wheel well or under the vehicle, "ensuring storage space and load volume remain unchanged," as Opel mentioned in a press statement.

In case you're worried for your personal safety as carrying an LPG tank on the back seat of your car isn't exactly comfortable. Well, Opel says that "safety was a top priority during development of these models: the vehicles all went through extensive endurance tests, the LPG tank and all components were subjected to crash tests and meet all safety standards."

In terms of performance figures, the Corsa 1.2 LPG ecoFLEX generates 78 horsepower while releasing 127 grams of CO2 per kilometer. The 1.4 LPG version on the other hand produces 87 horsepower and 129 g/km of CO2, the same as the Meriva 1.4 LPG. The LPG 1.6-liter powertrain on the Astra Station Wagon brings out 108 horsepower and 142 g/km of CO2 while the Zafira produces 136 hp and 159 g/km CO2.

Here are the detailed preliminary specs together with prices for each model:

  • Corsa 1.4 LPG ecoFLEX with 64 kW/87 hp, 129 g/km CO2, from 14,780 euros
