Opel Astra TCR Racecar Coming to Frankfurt, All We Get For Now Is Renderings

Remember the Opel Astra OPC Extreme presented last year in Geneva? If yes, prepare for a memory flashback upon seeing official design sketches with the Opel Asta TCR racecar.

So far, all we get from Opel's PR pipeline are two design sketches from Pixel Land, but that will do because the Germans plan to show the TCR on their home turf, at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Astra TCR is based on the new Astra, which will also be unveiled at the German venue. The thing is, Opel is still developing the TCR so they couldn't provide us with technical specs just yet.

The specs are not yet here

However, we can tell you that the TCR series have a set of regulations that, among other things, specify that race cars must use two-liter turbocharged engines that have an output of 330 horsepower and maximum torque of 410 Nm (302 lb-ft).

These figures are not very far from what the Astra OPC Extreme had to offer. If you recall, the hatchback turned smoking hot hatch was announced to deliver over 300 horsepower (although Opel never disclosed the exact power figure), so we don't need the official specs to make an idea about the race car's under-the-hood mojo.

In terms of exterior armouring, the Opel Astra TCR will be granted a track-oriented body kit, twice as aggressive compared to what the Astra OPC Extreme had to offer.

Here's what Opel's wants to do with the Astra TCR, according to CMO Tina Müller:

“Touring car racing has always been an important part of Opel. The philosophy of the new TCR series corresponds to our idea of customer racing. We want to give ambitious privately owned teams a platform for exciting sport at reasonable costs.”
