Opel Astra Gets New 1.6 CDTI Diesel Engine With 136 HP

Whenever we test drive Opel models, we like to get them with turbocharged 1.6-liter petrol engine that come close to 200 hp. But in reality, most people buy either the diesel models or the naturally aspirated 1.6 that's cheaper.

Probably the most significant new engine for the new Astra range was announced today the Russelsheim German automaker. A new 1.6 CDTI turbodiesel will be available, replacing the old 1.7-liter and offering all-round improvements.

Output has increased by 6 hp, even though the engine is smaller. However, the most important figure is the 320 Nm of very useful torque. Fuel consumption is now 3.9 l/100km combined, which they say is 7% better than the 1.7 diesel, while emissions are now just 104 g/km.

As for performance, the Astra now goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.3 seconds and shows its flexible legs with 80 to 120 km/h in just 9.2 seconds in fifth gear.
