OnStar Gets New Look for 2013
Following the trend set by Toyota with the GT 86, the 2013 Chevy Camaro will get a frameless mirror with electrochromic buttons. This setup is a tribute to the old Camaros that had a similar setup. They are also auto-dimming and come standard on the Camaro 2SS, 2LT, ZL1 coupe and convertible.
The button previously known as “Hands-Free Calling” is now the Voice Command Button, the one on the left with the symbol of a man speaking. “Many drivers are unaware of all that OnStar has to offer,” said McKibbon. “We feel this new look will better shows the breadth of our voice-based services.”
The emergency button, previously a white cross in a red circle, is now a red button with “SOS” written on it. This is because the “SOS” sign is universal and GM wants to make OnStar a global service.
“While the new buttons are cool, it’s what’s behind the button that is most impressive,” said Douglas McKibbon, engineering group manager, OnStar Hardware. “The buttons were changed for a few different reasons, but one was to better reflect the software updates that have gone into this current generation of OnStar.”
