Older iPhones Won’t Get the Next-Generation CarPlay Update

The upcoming iOS 15 operating system update planned by Apple for the fall of this year is likely to leave behind a series of older iPhones. For CarPlay users, this means they will be missing on the latest-generation improvements for the car experience.
According to a report, iOS 15, which as per Apple’s typical release schedule, is projected to go live in the fall, would no longer run on iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and the original iPhone SE. In other words, you’re going to need at least an iPhone 7 or newer to be able to install iOS 15.

While confirmation from Apple does not exist (and there’s a chance it won’t be offered until the WWDC developer event in the summer of the year, when a beta build of iOS 15 is expected), the cited report claims an Apple developer working on the Apple Maps app was the tipster this time.

At some level, such a change certainly makes sense, as Apple needs to upgrade the minimum requirements in order to add new functionality to its operating system. With the A10 chip becoming the minimum processor to run iOS 15, the company can thus focus on new capabilities that wouldn’t otherwise be possible to run on older hardware.

As for what’s new on the CarPlay front in iOS 15, nothing is known at this point. Still, every operating system update typically brings important improvements for the experience behind the wheel. iOS 14, for example, introduced support for CarPlay wallpapers, as well as new categories of apps, including tools specifically built for electric vehicles. Of course, Apple Maps will also get massive improvements, and many of them will be available on CarPlay too.

As per Apple’s typical release calendar, iOS 15 is projected to be previewed in the summer at WWDC, while the stable build for all supported iPhones would be published in September. More information on what’s new should be shared in the upcoming months.
