EPA range estimates are just in for the 2016 Chevrolet Volt hybrid, and those interested in buying one are in for a pleasant surprise in terms of the range they'll be getting from the PHEV.
Thanks to Chevrolet's second-gen Voltec extended-range electric propulsion system, the 2016 Volt will offer a maximum pure electric range of 53 miles (or 85.2 km). This comes to confirm yesterday's rumors, but most important, we're looking at a max range improved by 40 percent compared to the first-gen Volt.

But Chevrolet claims they have data that shows "drivers of the first-generation Volt achieved and often exceeded the published EPA-estimated mileage", which they surely hope will happen with the 2016 Volt.

The golden bowtie company also expects Volt owners will use power solely from the 18.4-kWh lithium-ion battery for more than 90 percent of trips, but the 53-miles EPA estimated range looks decent already.

In theory, owners could expect to travel over 1,000 miles (1,600 km) between gas fill-ups, provided they charge regularly.

As you might know, the 2016 Volt uses an internal combustion petrol engine for the range-extender task. The unit's EPA-estimated fuel efficiency stands at 42 mpg US.

“We listened to our customers,” said Andrew Farah, vehicle chief engineer, “They were very clear when they told us that they wanted more range, and a fun driving experience behind the wheel. We are confident that the 2016 Volt delivers both.”

We'll let time and future 2016 Volt owners put that to the test, but things look good for the new Volt. Chevy designers took their time to improve the car's exterior styling, while engineers made sure performance was not completely overlooked.

The 2016 Volt is seven percent quicker than the model it replaces (0-60 mph or 0-96 km/h takes 8.4 seconds). In should go on sale a month or two, with a starting sticker of $26,495, with the $7,500 federal tax credit.
