NY-Bound Nissan Rogue Showcases Smart Rearview Mirror

Following in the footsteps of a technological feature first previewed on Audi's 2012 R18 race car, the Japanese manufacturer takes it up a notch by implementing digital rearview mirror technology in one of its production models. Nissan U.S.A. will showcase the Smart Rearview Mirror on the Rogue crossover heading to the New York International Auto Show.

Housed witin the structure of a traditional rearview mirror there's a built-in LCD monitor linked to a high-resolution camera mounted high up on the vehicle's rear. As opposed to the classic rearview mirror, this gizmo will provide you clear rearward visibility even when taller passengers occupy the rear seats or the boot is chuck-full of luggage.

Another great thing about the Smart Rearview Mirror is that you no longer get inconvenienced by traditional obstructions such as blindspots, chunky C-pillars, high tailgate line or rear headrests. This system also shows its usefulness in a number of environmental conditions such as rain and snow, but the best feature is that it provides minimal glare when followed by a vehicle with its high beams on or the sun shines strongly from the back.

A switch function, operated by a button located at the bottom of the mirror, allows the driver to access either the traditional rearview mirror or the Smart Rearview Mirror.

Nissan plans to implement this feature in an experimental race car scheduled to compete at the 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. The Smart Rearview Mirror system will be introduced to global markets over the next few years after an initial rollout to Japanese customers this spring.
