NUMMI Workers to Receive Another $19M in Aid
Besides all of these, the US Department of Labor granted an additional $19 million for the NUMMI plant, in an effort to minimize the negative aspects of the closure. Basically, this means that each employee will receive a new tranche of money, this time funded by the government. Additionally, Hilda Solis, Secretary of the Department, said that workers will also get retraining and other support, according to a report by dailymarkets.com.
Getting back to Tesla's deal with Toyota, the electric car manufacturer intends to build the Model S plus future models at the plant, with the Japanese partner to invest around $50 million.
"The Tesla factory effectively leverages an ideal combination of hardcore Silicon Valley engineering talent, traditional automotive engineering talent and the proven Toyota production system. We look forward to learning and benefiting from Toyota's legendary engineering, manufacturing and production expertise," said Tesla CEO Elon Musk back in May.
"By partnering with Tesla, my hope is that all Toyota employees will recall that 'venture business spirit' and take on the challenges of the future," Toyota President Akio Toyoda said in a statement. Toyota said it plans to introduce electric vehicles in 2012.
