Available with five or seven seats, customers can also opt for an All Mode 4x4-i four-wheel drive system on all but the most basic Visia model which comes with front-wheel drive only. In total, there are four straightforward trim levels: Visia, Acenta, n-Tec and the range-topping Tekna.

Strandard features on the entry-level Visia model are plenty, including: 17-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, electric parking brake, six airbags, ABS, EBD and ESP, a tire pressure monitoring system, a 5-inch TFT display, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity for your phone, a USB port and an AUX input, air conditioning, electric and heated mirrors, as well as hill start assist.

Pop the Japanese crossover's bonnet and you'll find a 1.6-liter dCi turbo diesel unit rated at 130 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. The Xtronic CVT transmission is available as on optional extra on every trim level except the Visia. In two-wheel drive guise, the X-Trail returns up to 57.6 mpg (combined cycle) and 129g/km of CO2.
