The small cargo van segment isn’t to be taken lightly, not even in the United States of America. Especially in congested cities, the size and utility of something like the Nissan NV200 makes it an interesting alternative to more conventional workhorses, i.e. pickup trucks. But size and utility alone don’t cut the mustard. Hence, the NV200 Compact Cargo gets a little bit more standard kit for 2017.
Available in two flavors (NV200 S from $21,230 and NV200 SV from $22,130), the base model of the smallest van sold by Nissan in the U.S. adds power door locks and hill start assist. The uppermost trim level, on the other hand, now features full wheel covers, chrome on the grille, as well as body-colored front and rear bumpers, outside mirrors, and rear license plate finisher. That’s not all there is to the 2017 model year NV200 Compact Cargo, though.
For 2017, Nissan's commercial vehicle also adds a richer Sliding Door Glass Package, now including wire mesh for the passenger side sliding door glass and back door glass, rear window defroster, and an interior rearview mirror. As ever, the NV200 Compact Cargo is covered by a basic limited warranty and a powertrain limited warranty coverage of five years/100,000 miles.
Speaking of the powertrain, don’t expect a thumpin’ great V8 under this car’s hood. Instead, a 2.0-liter engine with 131 horsepower and a Xtronic continuously variable transmission will have to make do. Albeit not exciting, the oily bits of the NV200 Compact Cargo are good for an EPA-rated 24 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. Beyond that, the small-ish workhorse is gifted with car-like handling, a small turning radius, dual sliding side doors, and 122.7 cu. ft. (3,474.4 l) of maximum cargo space.
On the optional extras front, available goodies include Bluetooth for your mobile phone with audio streaming function, USB input, Sirius XM satellite radio, rearview camera, satellite navigation, and a 5.8-inch infotainment system. Nissan Voice Recognition is also on the menu.
