NHTSA Investigates 60,000 '14 Chevrolet Impala Sedans Over Braking Issue

Following a single report of "inappropriate activation of the emergency braking system", the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration started preliminary investigations in order to find out if this is a solitary case or all 2014MY Impala sedans equipped with the Forward Collision Avoidance System will undergo a recall operation.

According to the Detroit News, "the driver assist system inappropriately activated emergency braking bringing the vehicle to a complete stop under what the driver considered to be full braking force". The driver experienced this problem in a virtually new 2014 Chevrolet Impala owned by a rental car company, with just 2,500 miles on the odometer.

More worringly, the driver claimed in his complaint to the NHTSA that the vehicle's Forward Collision Avoidance System spontaneously activated on several other occasions.

It's kind of funny how the agency was spurred to formally start investigating the issue in just three weeks since that single complaint was made. Remember how the NHTSA declined in September 2007 to probe hundreds of thousands of General Motors vehicles for air bag failures that led to at least four fatal crashes? Those same vehicles are now included in the latest GM recall saga.

A General Motors spokesman declared for the aforementioned publication that the Detroit auto giant is fully cooperating with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to reach a verdict on this matter.
