Next S-Klasse to Come in Four Body-styles, Including Four-seater Convertible

When you say the words “Mercedes Benz S-Klasse” most people think of a big luxury sedan that looks good with Brabus wheels. That assumption about the body-style of the big S is to become dated with the next generation, which is set to arrive late next year as a 2013 model.

Most of the rumors until now have been all about the changes under the bonnet or to the legroom on offer, but what if we told you the next S-Klasse will offer a total of four different bodies? As you might expect, two wheelbase options cover two of those versions. The third is something that will take the guise of the big CL coupe, which was based on the ‘S’ in the past.

So what does that make the fourth variant? It’s not a four-door coupe, as the CLC has that handled, and it’s not a big ugly wagon. According to carmagazine.co.uk, we'll get to see a four-seater convertible by 2014. The German carmaker has toyed with the idea of offering a four-seater convertible for years, but it never got round to actually rolling a production one out of the factory gates.

Back in 2007, the Ocean Drive Concept was shown with a four-door configuration, but sources expect the production S to pack two doors like the CL coupe. Of course, all this might change, but if it does make it to production, we should see it arrive in 2014.

All future rear-wheel drive Mercedes models will be based on a brand new components set known as MRA, which is short for Mercedes Rear-wheel drive Architecture. MRA is subdivided into 93 different modules which is a indication of just how flexible this matrix can be.
