The Volvo V40 is a great compact-sized car, especially in Cross Country form, and more so after the Swedish manufacturer garnished it with a pair of Thor’s Hammer headlights. But then again, the V40 is getting a bit long in the tooth. Therefore, an all-new generation is slated to debut in 2017.
Volvo is going to refresh the entire 40 Series no later than the calendar year 2018. Other than the V40 hatchback and S40 sedan, the Swedish automaker will debut the XC40, a crossover that will rival class favorites such as the Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Audi Q3. And good golly, our first taste of the 40 Series family comes courtesy of Volvo on Snapchat.

According to Volvo, we'll soon see the debut of “small car concepts” that serve as design studies for the all-new 40 Series. The first models slated to enter production are the V40 and XC40, then the S40 will follow no later than the second half of 2017 or early 2018. What do these models have in common? First of all, Thor’s Hammer headlights. Secondly, the front grille appears to be a tad different from those that dominate the front fascia of the Volvo 90 Series (S90 sedan, V90 longroof, and XC90 SUV).

Co-developed with Chinese automaker Geely, the new assortment of compact-sized Volvo models are underpinned by the CMA platform, a smaller version of the Scalable Product Architecture of the mid-sized lineup. In terms of oily bits, performance will come courtesy of engines varying from 1.5 liters and three cylinders to 2.0 liters and four cylinders. Considering how ambitious Volvo is in its push for electrification, PHEV variants of the V40, XC40, and S40 are bound to happen at some point.

However, the most intriguing thing about the refreshed 40 Series is that Volvo is steering away from its “old man’s brand” persona. Teasing the small concepts on Snapchat is one tell-tale sign that Volvo is gunning for the younger audience. The other clue is a line reading “Not your daddy’s Volvo.” Need I say anything more?
