Ahead of its debut at the upcoming Paris Motor Show, Czech carmaker Skoda has just revealed an official sketch of its Fabia hatchback. This next-generation supermini is supposedly designed to look young, fusing "crystalline shapes and sharp lines with the highest precision." We'll be the judge of that!
The new Fabia actually doesn't look all that revolutionary, more like a shrunken Rapid Spaceback. However, Skoda has always been the more reasonable and practical out of all the VW Group brands.
Designed to appeal to as many average European buyers as possible, the new Fabia is actually meant to be simple to make and non-offensive. And yet there's actually something a little different about it that this sketch reveals. Supposedly, the world of motorsport served as part of the inspiration and as such, "the new Skoda Fabia is now nine centimeters wider and stands three centimeters lower."
Unless those are typos, the automaker has just announced some of the most major proportional changes in the supermini segment. Adding 90mm to its width would mean this third-generation car now measures 1,732mm, a bit more than a Ford Fiesta.
Most reports suggest the Fabia 3 is actually not based on the new MQB platform used by the current Octavia, but on an updated version of its old underpinnings. The engines will also carry over, though with big improvements in fuel consumption and emissions. For a much clearer picture of Skoda's next supermini, check out our latest spyshots.
