New Porsche 911 Details

One of the most important chapters in the automotive history books is the one belonging to the Porsche 911. And this is about to receive one more page next year, as Porsche will be launching a new generation of the 911 that will use the 991 internal name.

According to autocar, the vehicle will come with important tech changes and a long list of interior changes. You guessed it, the exterior will only get a mild refresh.

The powerplant stays at the back, with the engine range including updated versions of the carmaker’s six-cylinder, direct injection Boxer unit. The entry-level Carrera version will get a 3.6 liter engine delivering 365 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, while the Carrera S will receive a 3.8 liter unit developing 415 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque.

Porsche plans to increase efficiency by adding a stop-start system and a braking energy regeneration one. These are expected to bring a 12 percent increase in city cycle fuel economy.

The engines will sit on a platform built mostly from steel and will be house by a body that uses steel, aluminum and plastic composites. Porsche is putting the car on a diet, with the Carrera model expected to be 45 kg lighter than the current generation one.

The vehicle will grow a little in length and width, with the wings being enlarged in order to accommodate the upcoming vehicle’s 20 inch rims. The front axle will share components with the one of the upcoming Boxster model, which will hit the market in 2012.

As expected the car’s overall silhouette will remain unchanged. However, it will receive new details, with the changes covering the headlights and taillights, exterior mirrors and the addition of active aerodynamic elements on certain models (Turbo).

The vehicle’s slightly increased wheelbase and track will offer a bigger interior space and a more generous luggage compartment. Porsche has chosen to adopt some of the interior design philosophy elements used by the Cayenne and Panamera.
