German auto brand Opel decided to come with its own solution to today's fluctuating fuel prices, offering drivers attractive alternatives with its LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) models. The first model to become available to order is the Corsa LPG ecoFLEX, which is soon to be followed by the similar variants of the Meriva, Astra, Zafira Tourer and Insignia.

Opel claims this complete LPG solution comes with multiple advantages, including about 40 percent reduction in fuel costs and 15 percent lower CO2 emissions as compared to the comparable gasoline models.

For instance, the new Corsa 1.2 LPG ecoFLEX offers 83 hp in LPG mode (85 hp in gasoline operation), while producing only 110 g/km of CO2 in three-door form, or 115 grams as a five-door version. The four other LPG ecoFLEX models to follow are based on the 1.4-liter turbo gasoline engine.

Also, an operating range of between 1,100 km and 1,500 km (684 and 932 miles) is possible with full gasoline and LPG tanks. The switch between modes (LPG to gasoline and vice-versa) happens automatically or via manual preset buttons.

And last but not least another advantage is the vehicle tax. The owner of a gasoline Corsa in Germany must pay 44 euro per year, for the LPG version it is only 26 euro – so tax savings total over 40 percent.

Safety wise, Opel ensures us there are no reasons to worry, as its LPG systems are subject to standard test procedures and inspections that preclude any increased risk of fire. In addition, comprehensive testing and crash tests that meet the company's particularly strict criteria are conducted.

In fact, the Opel LPG system is completely installed in collision-protected parts of the car, and has been optimally integrated into the vehicle's safety structure.
