Starting today, June 5th, a new affordable SUV is available for cash-stripped Russian consumers. It's called the Terrano and as most of you will have already noticed, it's actually a Renault Duster with some cosmetic changes.
Both the front and rear ends of the car have been redesigned to mirror Nissan's brand identity. Some of the body panels are shared with the Duster, but Terranos get their own headlights, bumpers and grille. A big front fascia is connected to the headlights and together they forms a V-shaped design reminiscent of old Pathfinder and the Xterra. It's not modern, more timeless and rugged than anything else.
Engine choices are limited to a 1.6-liter petrol and a bigger 2-liter, rated at either 102 or 135 hp, respectively. Transmission choices include 5- and 6-speed manuals, with a more expensive 4-speed automatic offered on the 2-liter model. This is, of course, a powertrain borrowed from the old Clio supermini, which the Duster shares its platform with.
Production for the Russian market has already started at the Avtoframos factory near Moscow. Once demand picks up, Renault is likely to share its tried and tested 1.5-liter dCi diesel, which has been available on Dacia and Renault SUVs for a while now, producing either 85 or 110 hp.
Prices start at 677,000 rubles and can go as high as 885,000 (€14,350 to €18,750). Standard equipment for the all models includes ABS, ESP, a steel underbody shield for the engine, full-size spare wheel, driver and front passenger airbag, air conditioning with particle filter and electric front windows.
