When McLaren started doing passenger cars for real, the 12C was its calling card. The first road-going McLaren after the limited-run F1 from the 1990s then evolved into the 650S. Having reached its zenith with the 688 PS MSO HS, McLaren's automotive division is now working on a brand new Super Series model.
Presently referred to as the 2018 McLaren P14, it’s very likely the new kid on the block will bear the 7xxS name. Due to arrive sometime next year at a major auto show, the 650S replacement will “raise eyebrows.” These two tell-tale words come straight from McLaren head honcho's mouth, not mine.
According to Mike Flewitt, “unpredictable” is another word that defines the next core model of the Super Series range. Design-wise, the mid-engine supercar certainly looks like a departure from the 650S. As you can see in the spy video published by Petrol Ped on his YouTube channel, the rear end marries styling cues from the P1 hypercar with a 675LT-inspired two-pipe exhaust layout.
Looked straight on from the rear, it’s impossible not to spot how much bigger the P14’s haunches are when compared to the 650S. And boy, would you look at those cutouts in the camo wrap? They are there to help the engine (and its set of turbochargers) cool. As for the fresh air needed for the 3.8-liter V8’s suck-squeeze-bang-blow action, the P14 hides two side massive air intakes.
On that note, McLaren dealers are believed to secretly take £10,000 deposits from customers who want to get the P14 as immediately as possible after market launch. Hearsay suggests that a further £20,000 are due to be paid when McLaren publishes the final specs. Speaking of specs, the 650S hits 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.0 seconds, on to a top speed of 207 mph (333 km/h). It’s a given, then, that the P14 will impress with even crazier numbers.
