The internet knows the previous generation compact from Mazda not as the 3, but as the car with the idiot anime smile. Salvation for the Japanese seemed to come from KODO: Soul of Motion, their new language. It has serious brows, a nicer grille and a moody overall look.
All was right with the world until we realized where their inspiration came from for their next model. Having looked at the new Hazumi concept, a preview for the next Mazda2 supermini, we realized it looks just like red bird from Angry Birds. Being a dead ringer for one of the most famous game 'characters' is no bad thing. The legendary basic bird has probably been used by close to a billion people to kill every green pig in sight. It makes a very nice battle cry if you tap the screen and we think there's even a stuffed version somewhere around the autoevolution office.
Blending the KODO language to a small hatchback is not going to be easy for Mazda. Their first car with KODO lines was the very long, very sexy Mazda6. Blending those lines to the 2 means short movements of the designing pen, which makes it look like a diminutive cartoon character. That's exactly how red bird is designed as well, basically an exaggerated version of a bird's head. Add a grille that looks like a beak and headlights that look angry and voila!
