Mazda’s current global lineup has somewhat improved with the introduction of Skyactiv technologies and the arrival of their first in-house developed vehicle, the CX-5 compact crossover. They somehow found the money to reengineer the rotary engine and could eventually couple it to an electric motor to create a hybrid sportscar.
But what about the bread-and-butter models? The Japanese automaker has revealed that the production Mazda6 sedan will debut at the Paris Motor Show in September, and the larger platform could potentially be used for something else as well.
A replacement for the current CX-9, built under the 2014 model year for the North American market will arrive in late 2013. This means we should see a preview concept at the end of 2012 or early in 2013.
Like the smaller CX-5, the CX-9 will be built using all new technologies, like the Skyactiv energy systems for engines and gearboxes, using aluminum and high-strength steel.
We already know that Mazda is planning to drop the V6 engine in favor of a four-cylinder unit in the Mazda6. This will probably also be the case with the CX-9.
