There is an open battle between BMW and KTM, and the new big bike models for 2013 take things even further. Just as we thought BMW were the only ones to install a 19-inch front wheel on their R 1200 GS, we learned that KTM have done exactly the same thing with their new Adventure.
Despite all the features and additional power for both bikes, with KTM adding 65% more power to their 1190, it's clear that they are becoming a bit more street-oriented. And this will not make the hardcore globetrotters happy at all, we could vouch for that.
All in all, let's take a look at what's new in the 1190 KTM. From the beginning, the overall design is a bit leaner than the former 990 models, with a lot of curves and less harsh appearance. The styling is still brutal and aggressive, but it simply has another twist to it, now. We'd be inclined to say that the 1190 is a tidier bike.
The new Adventure packs combined ABS and Traction Control, while offering tyre pressure sensors, as well. There are 5 riding modes available: Sport (all the power,a ll the drift and fun), Street (full power but on the smoother side), Rain (100 BHP max), Offroad (100 BHP max, with up to 100% slippage) and the Off mode, putting the rider in absolute control over the beast, come what may.
1190 Adventure boasts adjustable seat, foot rests (really nice feature), windshield and drive-by-wire to let the above-mentioned modes really work. The machine weighs the same as the old 990 Adv: 230 kg (507 lbs) fully tanked with 23 liters, so the new 150 BHP engine will surely be more fun! KTM claims the 1190 is 20% less fuel-hungry, but that's still to be tested out in the field.
Finally, the 1190 Adventure is loaded with ContiTrail tyres (as far as all pictures until now have shown) and this is yet another proof for a “streetier” character. Unfortunately, it looks like the KTM 1190 Adventure will not make it to the US markets until 2014.
