New C-Class Estate Takes on Audi A4 Avant and BMW 320d Touring

Competition in the compact premium estate market is as fierce today as it's ever been and Mercedes hopes its new C-Class can win it the gold medal. Arriving in German dealerships right now, the all-new S205 compact estate from Stuttgart is definitely a looker, but is that enough to top the cheaper Audi A4 Avant and dynamic BMW 3 Series Tourer?

The latest comparison test from the Germans at Auto Bild puts the three best cars in this class up against each other. From Mercedes comes the C 250 BlueTec with an AMG body kit, joined by the BMW 320d Touring and the Audi A4 2.0 TDI.

All come with turbocharged four-cylinder engines, but their outputs are definitely not the same. With the bigger 2.2-liter mill and more power (204 hp), the C-Class T-Model is actually the fastest car in the group, capable of 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 241 km/h. (Strangely, the German publication seems to have gotten its figures wrong in the video)

BMW's 320d only musters 184 hp and takes 0.8 seconds longer to reach the benchmark speed, also having a lower top speed. But the car that's really showing its age in this group test is the A4, which is not surprising.

Auto Bild says the interior of the C-Class is the best on offer and the legroom in the back is better than with the 320d Touring. The Audi is by no means a bad car, but with 0 to 100 km 8.6 seconds, it's not in the same performance class as the other two, this despite having 190 hp, 6 hp more than the Bimmer.

However, it does claw back lost ground by being the cheapest car in the test. At €36,650, the A4 2.0 TDI Avant is a full €10,000 less than the new Mercedes model and matches it for fuel consumption. If we take money out of the occassion though, it's pretty clear that the C 250 BlueTec is a fantastic estate to buy and own, good to look, economical and fast.
