The BMW X1 might be destined to hit dealers’ lots in the US this fall, but it’s a relatively old design already, having been in production since 2009 after it was showed as a concept in 2008 at the Paris Motor Show.
The next generation of X1 is on the way, and it will debut some time in 2015, together with the X2 which will be sold as a coupe. According Autocar, this will actually be built on the UKL platform that will first be used by the 2013 MINI Cooper and the 1-Series Gran Turismo, both front-wheel drive cars.
This architecture will be stretched and will get a Haldex all-wheel drive system for the X1 as well as the next MINI Countryman.
So, the car most likely be more practical and roomier inside but won’t come with sDrive rear-wheel drive. You’re looking at a transversally mounted engine as well.
