New Audi A7 Sportback 3.0 TDI competition Packs 326 HP of Diesel Power

Audi is celebrating 25 years of TDI diesel engines with a really cool special edition model, based on the A7 facelift that they've just launched. The car's full name is "Audi A7 Sportback 3.0 TDI competition" and it's available in Germany from €72,000. So, what do you get for about the same money as a BMW M3?

The best way to describe the A7 competition Special Edition is to call it the ultimate Audi diesel coupe currently in production. Power comes from a familiar twin-turbo 3-liter TDI, which was already available with 320 PS and quattro all-wheel drive on the A7. All Audi had to do for the "competition" special edition was to tweak the camshafts in order to get a slight boost to 326 PS. That's not all though. An overboost function gives you 20 extra PS for short periods, great for overtaking.

Audi says this limited edition model will sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in only 5.1 seconds. To put that into perspective, the A7 3.0 TDI competition sits between a BMW 535d xDrive (twin-turbo 3-liter with 313 PS and 0 to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds) and the 550d xDrive (tri-turbo 3-liter with 381 PS and 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds) in terms of both power and acceleration. The Bavarians also have their own diesel-powered four-door coupe, the 640d xDrive Gran Coupe, which takes 5.3 seconds to reach 100 km/h, but cost significantly more (€86,800 in Germany).

But that's the wrong way of looking at the A7 competition. It appeals mainly to die-hard Audi fans who love the A7's sharp design and know what the twin-turbo 3-liter V6 is capable of. For them, this is a 5-meter sportscar for the whole family that runs on diesel.

The Audi A7 Sportback 3.0 TDI competition also looks quite sharp. It comes with the S line package as standard and boasts 20-inch five-spoke alloy wheels painted in black and shod in 265/35 tires. Behind them the five-door coupe's stopping power is enhanced by 17-inch brake discs with red brake calipers. There are also V6 T emblems on the fenders, black exterior mirror housings and high-gloss black tailpipe trims.

Customers can opt for one of four sexy body colors (Nardo Gray, Misano Red, Daytona Gray and Sepang Blue) and enjoy Valcona leather-wrapped seats. Surprisingly, Audi offers standard LED headlights, but throws in its Matrix adaptive system only as an optional extra.
