With the current generation of the Genesis Coupe, Hyundai challenged the pony car world, with the Mustang being its favourite target. The plan didn’t exactly work out, so now that the South Korean automaker is working on the second incarnation of the vehicle, they’re leaving this pathway behind.
Instead, expect the next Genesis Coupe to move towards the Grand Tourer area. In English, this means the vehicle will grow in size and spoil its occupants with more lavish features.
The change may not be too obvious in the adjacent spy photos, since this is a mule we are talking about. Even so, hints on the future character transformation are here, such as the aprons on the test vehicle. Nonetheless, the tracks seem to be those of the current model.
As for what will underpin the next Coupe, Hyundai has recently introduced the 2015 second-generation Genesis Sedan, with the two-door incarnation set to follow suit.
For instance, the 5.0-liter V8 motivating the sedan will finally make its way into the Coupe - despite rumors of a V8-powered model for the current generation, this never became a reality. For the Coupe, the engine will probably be revisited, with the output set to climb past the 450 hp mark. You should also expect the automotive producer’s new HTRAC all-wheel-drive to play a part here.
As far as the styling is concerned, Hyundai has thrown us a few clues, which arrived in the form of the HND-9 Coupe Concept that was introduced at the 2013 Seoul Motor Show. We’ve also added an image of the concept in the gallery below.
In case this sounds tempting, you’ll have plenty of time to save up for the price premium the car will bring, as the new Genesis Coupe isn’t expected to land until 2016.
