New 2015 Skoda Fabia Revealed

The Skoda Fabia might not be that kind of car that keeps people awake at night, but it’s definitely one that caters to their needs during the day. Its maker obviously knows this, but it still insists on playing some sort of a teasing game when it comes to revealing the car. The latest instalment of the franchise sees Skoda offering us the first images of the 2015 Fabia.

The looks

The thrid-generation Fabia is the first production vehicle to integrate the styling language we’ve seen on the upmarket-targeting Vision C concept. As a result, for the first time in the model’s life, the design has a bit of a dynamic touch to it.

It’s not just the refined proportions that generate this effect (the car is 90 mm wider), the details have their role too. For instance, the Polo-like headlights and the grille were designed to look like one single element, while the first’s blacked-out nature also being important.

As for the ever-growing customization demand of the market, the Fabia 3 can be hand in 15 exterior colors, while you can choose a separate hue for the roof, rims and door mirrors. Moreover, there will be three equipment lines available.

Underneath, we have a revised version of the VW Group’s A0 platform, which is called PQ26. The main benefit here is a 65 kg diet, which sees the base model tip the scales at 980 kg.

On the inside

Skoda hasn’t said too much about the cabin so far, only letting us know that the interior space has increased, while the luggage compartment is now the largest in its class. As far as the features go, we can tell you the Fabia will feature MirrorLink smartphone connectivity, a first for the brand.

Power? We’d rather say “efficiency”.

Skoda had already revealed the Fabia’s engine line-up, with a 17 percent increase in efficiency across the board. As you can imagine, the units are borrowed from the VW Polo facelift.

The petrol range includes two 1.0 MPI three-cylinder units that replace the old 1.2 engines, delivering 60 hp and 95 Nm, or 75 hp and 95 Nm. We’ll also receive two turbocharged 1.2 TSI units with 90 or 110 hp.

As for the diesel side of the range, the old 1.2 TDI and 1.6 RDI have both been scrapped in the favor of a 1.4 TDI three-cylinder unit. This will be offered in three power versions that will mirror the output of the replaced powerplans, but with increased efficiency: 75, 90 and 105 hp. While the torque levels haven’t been made public, we expect these to sit at 210, 230 and 250 Nm, on tap from 1,500 rpm.

Late next year, the Fabia will receive another diesel unit. We’re talking about the 2015 Fabia Greenline, which will be powered by a 75 hp 1.4 TDI that will be aided by a start-stop system, a kinetic energy recuperation and low-rolling resistance tires, as well as aerodynamic enhancements. This should lower the fuel consumption to an official average of 3.1 liters per 100 km, with CO2 emissions as low as 82 g/km.

While a manual will be standard, the Fabia will continue to come with an optional 7-speed DSG transmission, but only for the engines with the higher outputs.

Not necessarily in a surprising move, the Fabia vRS warm hatch is expected to be discontinued due to the poor demand.

We'll meet the 2015 Fabia this fall, al the Paris Motor Show.
