If you think the new Mazda6 is a nice-looking sedan, just you wait until they come out with a new MX-5!
There's something about the Miata that you must love if you're a petrolhead. It's not particularly fast or that nice to look at, and yet Mazda has been making them for so long that it's got the formula down to an art. For the next generation, Alfa Romeo is part of the team, but they're not going to rely on the Italians to put Giulietta headlights on the car. Oh no, the KODO design language will get a 2.0 upgrade and is thus going to be even better than on the Mazda6.

As the above rendering shows, the MX-5 will look much more athletic and poised. Nobody will call you a boy racer if you drive one of these and you can probably park it at a posh hotel without it looking out of place.

While the design of the MX-5 delivers a heavy punch, the bodywork will go in the exact opposite direction. Last month, Mazda showcased an amazing super-light MX-5 chassis at the New York Auto Show. Going back to its compact roots, the car will feature its first Skyactiv platform, which is expected to shed plenty of weight in order to bring the minimum right down to 1,000 kg (2,204 lbs).

But the biggest surprise Mazda has in store for us is under the bonnet. There, reports place a 1.5-liter Skyactiv petrol, a simple 4-cylinder without any sort of turbocharging. Power should come in at about 125 hp, meaning the ratio between that and the weight of the car will remain the same as the current generation. Fuel economy should be down by about 30% percent, making this one of the most efficient non-hybrid cars you can guy.

A little birdie has told us that Mazda has organized focus groups to show images and specs with good results. So chances are that we now have a pretty good picture of the whole package.
