It’s safe to say that Porsche currently leads the auto world fight for efficiency - at the top tier, of course, and it is now time to see how this translates into the company’s latest goodie, the new 2014 Cayman.
When we say “efficiency” we’re not just referring to low fuel consumption, but also to performance and it seems like the 981 Cayman has plenty of technical assets that allow it to cover both areas.

Porsche tells us that it didn’t just place a roof on the new Boxster, using a deep engineering approach to develop the car. The Cayman now measures 172.4 inches (4,38 m) in length, 70.9 inches (1.8 m) in width and 50.9 inches (1.29 m) tall, so it is longer and sits lower than its predecessor, with a longer wheelbase and wider tracks. However, the new Cayman is 30 kg (66 lbs) lighter than the car it replaces.

As we previously reported, the 981 Cayman shares its engines with the new Boxster, but the two units now offer an extra 10 hp. Thus, the Cayman is powered by a 2.7-liter boxer unit that produces 271 hp (275 ps). With the standard six-speed manual, the car hits 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.7 seconds, while the PDK transmission takes the time to 5.6 seconds and even 5.4 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package.

As for the Cayman S, this uses a 3.4-liter flat six with 321 hp (325 ps), which pushes the car past the 62 mph (100 km/h) mark in 5 seconds flat when when working with the standard six-speed manual, while the PDK double-clutch box shaves 0.1s off that time. As for the Cayman S with the PDK gearbox and the optional Chrono Sport Package, this offers an impressive 4.7s time for the sprint.

Inside the car, you’ll recognize the Boxster, but Porsche has upgraded the materials, as well as the gadgets. The Cayman’s luggage capacity was already impressive, but with this new generation the car has gained 15 liters of storage space, so it now offers a total of 425 liters.
