He first took delivery of the car on December 15th 1966 through a deal with a Florida-based dealership “Jim Rathman Chevrolet” which, in an effort to boost Corvette sales, decided to lease them to astronauts. They would get the cars, use them for a year, then return them and get a brand-new one each year, and thus this car was driven for exactly one year by Armstrong and afterward, it was returned to the dealer.
The next owner of the car was a NASA employee who used it on the road until September 1981, when he decided to store it in a “climate controlled environment” and then later passed it on to its current owner.
Unfortunately, the car is not completely original, as one of its owners, at some point, decided to give the car flared wheelarches (a job still left unfinished), but also changed the carburetors, exhaust and the water pump.
The car is now for sale “as is” on eBay and bidding, while it started at $100,000 (€76,000), has now reached $249,990 (€190.300). We just hope that the new owner will properly restore it using original parts to preserve both its looks, heritage and rich history.
