New Motorcycle Sound Test Released by SAE

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International has recently produced a sound test standard to determine whether a motorcycle emits excessive noise. The test can be used on streetbikes or highway motorcycles. After studying a wide variety of on-highway motorcycles, the J2825 "Measurement of Exhaust Sound Pressure Levels of Stationary On-Highway Motorcycles," was issued. The new standard establishes instrumentation, test site, test conditions, procedures, measurements and sound level limits. "The motorcycling community and law enforcement have long sought a practical field test for measuring street motorcycle exhaust sound," said Ed Moreland, AMA vice president for government relations.
