More Goodies from CES 2016: TomTom Launches Highly Automated Driving Maps

Dutch company TomTom, which produces navigation and mapping products, has delivered its Highly Automated Driving (HAD) map products, meant for California’s interstate roads as well as Michigan’s interstates and freeways, at CES 2016.

The locations were not chosen randomly because, as you know, these two states are like a paradise for carmakers, where their fully autonomous cars are being tested on public roads and in normal traffic conditions. By delivering these products, TomTom will help the automotive industry bring autonomous driving closer to reality.

Harold Goddijn, CEO at TomTom, stated, “I am proud of TomTom’s extended HAD leadership demonstrated by delivering 25,000 kilometers (15,534.28 miles) of HAD maps for the United States, less than four months following the launch of our HAD Map for the Autobahn in Germany.” He has also said that his company is “more excited than ever about the prospect of partnering with members of the HAD ecosystem to expedite the innovation that will transform the automotive industry and the way we drive.

Thanks to the HAD Map system, which will deliver highly accurate and realistic 3D border-to-border models of the road, a vehicle will know its exact position at all times, even when traveling at high speeds or when changes occur in the surrounding environment.

After mapping California and Michigan, TomTom may turn its focus to Nevada, also known as a testing ground for fully autonomous cars.

TomTom was founded in 1991 by Peter-Frans Pauwels, Pieter Geelen, Harold Goddijn and Corinne Vigreux. The company is headquartered in Amsterdam and currently has 56 offices in 37 countries.

After it acquired Tele Atlas for $2.9 billion, in 2008, TomTom became the main mapping data provider for Apple’s iOS 6 “Maps” app, replacing Google Maps, in 2012. Not very long ago, the Dutch company extended its deal with Apple and signed a new contract with Uber, which uses its maps and traffic in 300 cities worldwide.
