Death Race 2000 reminds us of two things: Caramageddon and Mad Max. This isn't your average 1975 Corvette C3 and it rather makes us smile. It might be an iconic piece of movie collectible, but you’ll have to agree that it looks rather peculiar, like some cartoon car your kid would love to play with in the backyard.
The fact it looks funny could mean a lot of things. First it shows how we used to picture a dystopian future about 40 years ago compared to how we do it today. It also proves that horrific movie scenarios are not something new to humans.

After all, Death Race 2000 was about an annual cross-country automobile race in which contestants were scored not only for their speed, but also on how many innocent pedestrians they were able to hit along the way.

Then there’s also the fact that automotive customization has evolved several levels if you were to compare the way they created movie vehicles back in the day. As we mentioned previously, the one-of-a-kind “alligator” Corvette follows the movie storyline of being built from a hodge-podge of vehicles.

It features an unusual combination of a Volkswagen chassis, Corvair air-cooled, dual carburetor engine with a 3-speed manual transmission. The supercharged V8 in the back is faux, while the actual motor is under the bonnet as it would be in a standard Corvette. A Corvette-style body riding on custom wheels and BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires complete this peculiar scenario.

If its construction does not impress you, then the reptilian-like “spiked spine,” intimidating “teeth” up front, Green diamond-pleated interior with wrapped steering wheel, unique windscreen and custom tail lights sure will. The iconic vehicle will go under the hammer at the Mecum Auction running May 9 through May 11 yet there's still no word on the starting price.
