There used to be a time when the original MINI was seen in all sorts of race venues. Once motorsport gets into your blood there is no getting it out, so the British carmaker just couldn’t help but ad something a bit less dirty than rallying. An endurance racing version of the MINI Cooper Coupe that’s just been revealed will hit the track this weekend (June 25 to 26) at the popular Nurburgring 24-hour race.

MINI will be bringing everything it has learned in the the MINI Challenge series with the hatchback, and it’s a good thing, because the famous German endurance race is expected to bring with it 250,000 fans eager to see something special.

The MINI John Cooper Works Coupe Endurance will be powered by a the same 1.6-liter as the production vehicle, but power has been boosted to 250 hp, while the overboost function pushes peak torque up to 330 Newton meters (243 pound-feet).

The JCW Coupe Endurance achieves a high level of safety, thanks to features including a roll cage welded to the body and a sports bucket seat with six-point safety belt and Formula One-style HANS (Head And Neck Support) system. When it comes to active safety, the car adopts the braking system with Race ABS from MINI Challenge racing and adds a specially tuned DSC dynamic control system, also optimized for the race track.

To help speed up the pitstops, MINI has also fitted the Coupe with pneumatic jack that will help cut vital seconds off a tire change.
