This year at the Detroit Auto Show MINI introduced its new Hardtop model to the masses, marking its US premiere at the time. Next year we’ll be seeing yet another premiere but this time it would be of a global scale.
The recently revealed John Cooper Works hardtop will be presented in the metal for the first time in Detroit, marking yet another couple of firsts for the British manufacturer. Amongst them we could count the first ever JCW model with a 2-liter engine and the most powerful car ever made in Oxford. But those are just a few of the novelties.

Visitors will get to see the car under the limelight starting with January 17 and lasting up to January 25, 2015. During that period, there will be plenty of time to admire its new shapes.

But what’s different?

For the hardcore JCW version, MINI decided to use a new front bumper, new wheels, new brakes and a more aggressive rear bumper. The differences are rather limited to styling cues that are subtle, at the most.

Up front, there are two new air intakes positioned towards the sides of the car while round the back you’ll notice a new look as well, also including some new mesh.

Behind the wheels you’ll notice new, red brake calipers with the JCW logo on them while the rims themselves feature a different design. The key lies under the bonnet though.

Packing 231 HP and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque, this is the most powerful car MINI ever made. The 2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine comes from BMW and is also used on the 225i Active Tourer model that also shares a lot of the underpinnings on this car.

As far as other numbers go, the JCW hardtop will do 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.1 seconds with the automatic gearbox and 6.3 seconds with the manual 6-speed. That’s what you were looking for, right?

The MINI Superleggera Vision

Another showstopper on the scene will be the MINI Superleggera Vision, a concept that is supposed to go into production in the near future and show us all what the British brand stood for in the first place.

That’s because the resulting car is supposed to be extremely small in size and offer great mobility levels, especially around town thanks to its dimensions. Electric motors are also expected to be included either as standalone options or as part of a hybrid setup.

The North American International Auto Show is now one of the biggest auto shows in the world and will be held for the 27th time in 2015. More than 200 companies will be presenting their current new models, products and technologies at the Cobo Center in Detroit. Like last year, the organisers expect NAIAS 2015 to attract more than 800,000 visitors. We’ll be there to offer you the best live coverage.
