Mikko Hirvonen Drifts the Mercedes-AMG GT S On a Frozen Lake

The Mercedes-AMG GT S is good at many things, even drifting, provided the one behind the wheels know what he’s doing. But drifting on a frozen lake requires a special type of talent, which means a special kind of driver must be summoned.

In case the name Mikko Hirvonen doesn’t ring any bells, shame on you. The Finnish former rally driver honed his skills in the World Rally Championship (WRC) and helped Ford secure manufacturers’ title in both 2006 and 2007.

He was also unlucky enough to compete in an era dominated by Sebastien Loeb and therefore finished as a runner-up, behind Loeb, in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012. But that’s still good enough for us. Not to mention the man can drift the Mercedes-AMG GT S on ice. No, make that a frozen lake for that matter.

It really goes without saying that the legendary rally driver’s version of a test drive is more about going sideways than actually testing the car. But again, that’s good enough for us and we’re pretty darn sure you’ll feel the same way.

Hirvonen was impressed by the balance of the car as well as by the amount of power and torque coming from the engine but felt that the ‘only negative thing’ was the position of the paddle shifters, which makes gear shifting in mid corner slightly difficult.

On that note, we’ll just add that there are almost six minutes of quality stuff and sideways driving on ice in the video below so...need we say more?
