Mercedes to Use Renault-Nissan Engines

The Renault-Nissan - Mercedes tie-up will help both sides a lot and the first to benefit from the alliance is the German manufacturer, who intends to borrow the new 1.6-liter turbodiesel engine developing 128 horsepower for some of its models. Of course, the French-Japanese group will also receive the Germans' 2.0-liter petrol engine and some of its V6 and V8 configurations to be installed on a still unknown range of models.

According to Autocar, Mercedes intends to use Renault-Nissan's powerplant for the new A-Klasse and B-Klasse, both of which are expected to be launched next year. Although yet not confirmed, Renault-Nissan might also bring Merc's AMG units in Infiniti IPL models, but the two companies are also jointly developing a couple of other projects.

For example, the three carmakers are working on three and four-cylinder gasoline and diesel units that would be installed on most of the brands included in the groups, such as Mercedes, smart, Renault and Nissan. The aforementioned source says their displacement will be between 1.2 and 1.8-liter and will be engineered by Daimler but manufactured by Renault. Besides the A- and B-Klasse, the next-generation Clio and Megane are also likely to receive the new units.

As for the AMG engines destined to the Infiniti IPL models, rumors suggest that one of the potential candidates for the future beefed-up Infiniti models is Mercedes’ upcoming 3.5 liter turbocharged V6 unit. This would be pumped-up to deliver up to 400 hp and could replace the Japanese carmaker’s 3.7 liter in its G range.

A future IPL version of the Infiniti M might be also on the table, which could receive AMG’s 6.2 liter V8 powerplant and become a competitor for the German Power War fighters and their rivals.
