Excitement will get a new definition this fall, when German manufacturer Mercedes Benz will be introducing the open top version of its SLS AMG sports car. Until then, given the long hot summer days ahead, the car maker decided to give the world another reason to make it through the scorching heat that awaits us.
Packing under the hood the same engine as the one fitted on the regular model, the Roadster will bring the same performance to the gullwing version. The convertible SLS AMG accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, and tops at 197 mph (electronically limited).
The main difference between the two model is, obviously, the different interpretations of the roof. In the Roadster, the retractable roof is a three-layered fabric soft top (available in three colors, black, beige and a classic red), that emerges from behind the seats. The roof can be opened and closed in 11 seconds and at speeds of up to 50 km/h (31 mph).
Mercedes has done some major work at the body of the model, to insure that the Roadster variant can cope with the high expectations customers have from the model and the demands of the high powered engine. The bodyshell’s rigidity has been increased by giving the dashboard additional supporting struts at the windscreen frame and at the center tunnel. AT the same time, a strut has been fitted between the soft top and the fuel tank.
The model is fitted with the new Adaptive AMG Sport Suspension with electronically controlled damping, enabling the damping characteristics to be modified in three modes: Comfort, Sport and Sport plus.
"The SLS Roadster is a super sports car, cruiser and highly desirable dream-car all in one. In its distinctive way, it continues the succession of iconic and exciting sports cars from Mercedes-Benz," said Dieter Zetsche, daimler chairman of the board.
