The Munich newspaper TZ reported that Daimler chief executive Dieter Zetsche actually met with some officials from the Deutsche Post in Bahrain to talk business. According to their inside information, it seems the deal could be signed by the European debut of Formula One this season – meaning the Spanish Grand Prix – due to take place in May.
DHL, which is a subsidiary of the Deutsche Post, is already a major sponsor of the Formula One Championship, but they'll now have the chance to join Mercedes GP and create an all-German force in the series. The last time DHL signed a sponsorship deal with an F1 team was in 2002, with Eddie Jordan's organization.
Back then, the Jordan single-seaters featured both the logos and colors of the DHL and Deutsche Post (red and yellow).
The famous German logistic company is yet to issue a statement on the matter, while Mercedes GP has also kept quiet on the rumors. No matter the duration of the potential contract, DHL will likely not become title sponsor of the Brackley based team, as that position has already been filled by Malaysian oil giant Petronas.
DHL's current commitments in the Great Circus – apart from being sponsors of the championship – are with German driver Timo Glock, who is now a Virgin Racing driver.
