It seems we won't have to wait until Monday morning to see what the GLC Coupe concept car looks like. That's because Mercedes has taken the virtual wraps off the car hours before the show, so that we can have a good look at what they've done.
For a compact Sports Activity Vehicle, it is svelte and elegant though not lacking in the sports department.

So what is the GLC Coupe? Well, according to the new naming scheme Mercedes wants to use, a GLC is the SUV equivalent of a C-Class, and this is a coupe version of that. Basically, you are looking at the rival to the BMW X4.

From bumper to bumper, he GLC Coupe measures 4.73 meters, which means it is 6 centimeters or about 2.5 inches longer than a BMW X4. However, the wheelbase is almost the same, so we think the difference is down to the styling elements of the concept.

Demand for Sports Activity Coupes is on the rise, and we're glad Mercedes is going to give us one of their own. We say, " are going to" because this is just a concept for now. The regular GLC should come out in two or three months, replacing the aging GLK, but this chopped version will take at least another year to develop.

The concept is interesting for a number of reasons. First, it's as yellow as a lemon. The design seems to preview something that's not quite as aggressive as a true AMG since the air intakes are prominent, but the wheel arches aren't flared. But what's that at the back?

It seems somebody forgot a few Lexus IS F parts on this Mercedes-Benz. We say that because quad exhaust pipes stacked vertically like that are a Japanese trademark design.

As for what's under the bonnet, we're looking at the latest twin-turbo 3-liter V6 Mercedes now uses on a lot of cars. It's said to produce exactly 367 PS and 520 Nm of torque, so it's a preview for the GLC 450 AMG Coupe. Mercedes said there was going to be an AMG version of the new GLC, but just like we expected, it's not powered by a V8.

This rival for the Audi SQ5 and upcoming BMW X4 M40i matches its V6 engine to a 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive. Mercedes also says active valves are installed on the exhaust system so that the GLC Coupe can be both quiet and sporty.

No photos of the interior are available, and they probably won't be in Shanghai either. All the windows are fully blacked out, so they don't want us to see what's inside. However, at least for now, we're satisfied with a new design for LED headlights, a new tailgate design and a new type of car from Mercedes.
