Mercedes G63 AMG: First Images

Have you ever taken a close look at the front bumper of a Mercedes-Benz G-Class and was scared by the massive metal? Well, Mercedes-Benz was aware of this visual aggression and has apparently found a solution, drilling huge holes into the bumper and covering them with mesh grille.

The Germans were also aware of how thirsty the supercharged G55 AMG was and thus they’ve replaced it with the new G63 AMG. Thus, the massive bonnet hides a 5.5-liter twin-turbo direct-injected V8 that allows the driver to control 544 hpat 5,500 rpm and 760Nm (560 lb-ft) between 2,000 and 5,000 rpm. The five-speed auto ‘box is also gone, having been replaced by the 7G-Tronic Plus.

Mercedes doesn’t want us to know what this means in terms of performance, because if it had released the go-fast specs of the car, everybody would’ve focused on that and overlooked the efficiency.

Thus, the carmaker is only telling us that the G63 AMG offers an efficiency of 13.8 liters per 100km (17 mpg) with CO2 emissions of 322 g/km. For the sake of comparison, we’ll tell you that the 5.4-liter supercharged unit in the defunct G55 AMG needed 16.3 liters of petrol to cover 100Km (14.4 US mpg).

Once you open the boxy-shaped door, you’ll find custom instruments, a two-tone leather finish, as well as carbon fiber trimming (Merc won’t tell us if this makes the G lighter).

PS: The side exhaust is fortunately still there, but let’s just hope that the twin-turbo engine isn’t much quieter than the replaced supercharged monster.
