Mercedes Confirms Schumacher Will Have No 3 Race Number

Even if the testing session with a GP2 development car has raised some concerns regarding Michael Schumacher's neck problems, the German now confirmed that he feels great and can't wait to start testing his team's car for the 2010 season.

During the second day of testing at the Jerez circuit earlier this month, the German driver admitted that he felt some slight neck pain when driving the GP2 car, but added that these things are supposed to be normal after a long period of inactivity. Today he echoed those comments, while also revealing that he can't wait to get past the testing season in February and step right into the grid of the season opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

The after-effects of that accident are gone since long, that's why I was sure that the neck would not cause any problems,” said Schumacher, according to his official website.

I can't wait to be back there,” added the 41-year old German, hinting that his desire to return to racing is higher than ever.

And just to make it more exciting, a spokeswoman for the Mercedes GP team told the media that the reports about Schumacher's wanting the No 3 race number within the team are indeed true and that the FIA already approved the switch.

Michael has a preference for odd numbers. He asked if he could be the odd number and we were happy to accept,” said the spokeswoman.

Until now, Schumacher each of his 7 world titles in Formula One with an odd number on his car (5 titles with the No 1, one with the No 3 and one with the No 5). The switch means Nico Rosberg will have the No 4 race number on his car. No one in the history of the sport has become world champion with the No 4 race number on his car.
