Mercedes is finding favor with customers thanks to the 3.5-liter direct-injected V6 engine found in anything from the SL roadster to its SUV range. The unit offers decent economy for its class and a decent sound, a fact which we discovered while testing the SLK roadster.

But while 302 horsepower (US spec model) sounds good for a sportscar, regular sedans also need more efficient engines, and the C300 4Matic is way due for a change.

According to CarandDriver, the German automaker plans to replace the 3.0-liter V6 with a detuned version of the 3.5-liter V6. The engine will have 248 horsepower and 340 Nm (251 lb-ft) of torque. The economy of the bigger engine will be kept in check by the addition of standard start-stop.

This news ties in well with the rumor that Mercedes will also introduce a 1.6-liter turbo to the C-Class range at the end of this summer.
