As some of you already know, Mercedes-Benz has a factory in Kecskemet, Hungary, where it builds cars based on the MFA platform. These models have a front-wheel-drive configuration, but some of them come with all-wheel-drive solutions.

The most recent investment announcement from the Stuttgart brand refers to plans to build another factory in Hungary, which could also make rear-wheel drive cars in the country.

The investment will be made in “the next few years” according to Mercedes-Benz officials, and it will add up to one billion euros. Instead of just expanding the existing facility, Daimler’s brand will build another factory in the same area as the existing plant.

The new facility will be complete with a body shop, paint shop, final assembly area, and a supplier park. The described elements are sufficient to making a complex like this independent from its existing "sibling," and Mercedes-Benz will take advantage of its existing infrastructure in Hungary to facilitate the construction, growth, and development of the new plant.

The second Mercedes-Benz factory located in Hungary will be built according to Industry 4.0 specifications, which will include a modular approach. Mercedes-Benz says it will be able to make both front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive cars there, and we would not exclude all-wheel drive models out of the potential lineup.

The German brand has not specified what kind of models it will build in Hungary, but Mercedes-Benz’s press release reminds everyone that its current portfolio consists of 32 models, and that it wants to offer 40 models shortly.

A few of those new models could be built in the facility that will be constructed in Kecskemet, Hungary. Do not exclude hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles from the potential models and variations that could be built at the new facility.
