Mercedes-Benz G500 4x4² Price Announced, It’s More than a G63 AMG

Few contraptions of the fascinating and wonderful world of the automobile ooze opulence better than the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. The Geländewagen story started in 1979 as a military vehicle, but the G-Wagen went to morph into the AMG brutes we all know and love at the end of the 1990s. Nowadays, the civilian G-Class family has a new member, which is way more expensive than the G63 AMG - some €83,000 more.

Priced at €226,100 in Germany, the Mercedes-Benz G500 4x4² is the second most costly G-Class in production. Only the G65 AMG and its bi-turbo V12 with 1,000 Nm of torque is more than that.

The pricing difference between the G500 4x4² and G63 is easy to explain though - one of those two is made to get to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.3 seconds while the other is a fancy tool to crawl on boulders, climb every mountain and ford every stream.

To arrive in European showrooms from December 2015, the Mercedes-Benz G500 4x4² is the four-wheeled, non-pickup version of the excessive G63 AMG 6x6. The highlight of this model isn’t the somewhat silly name, but the permanent four-wheel drive powertrain that boasts off-road-grade portal axles. Additionally, the 4-liter bi-turbo V8 engine is based on the mill powering the C63 uber sedan and AMG GT supercar. In the Mercedes-Benz G500 4x4²’s case, we’re talking about 422 HP (310 kW) and 610 Nm (450 lb-ft).

Other tell-tale signs that this thing is ready to tackle everything in its path is represented by the dual spring/damper struts and the adjustable damping system developed both for on and off-road driving. Due to the addition of the portal axles, this Hulk with four 22-inch off-road wheels prides itself with a track 299 millimeters wider than the series-production Mercedes G-Class.

Merc is adamant that when the dampers are in Sport mode, “the enhanced G-Class drives through bends so dynamically that the occupants feel as though they are in a sports car rather than a cross-country vehicle.” Uhm, not quite. If it’s an unsurfaced slope or snow on the road, “the performance of a high-powered rally car kicks in.” Just no, apples and oranges are not alike.

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz G500 4x4² is able to ford depths of up to 1,000 millimeters. On an ending note, compared to the normal Mercedes-Benz G500, which uses good ole rigid axles instead of fancy portal axles, the 4x4² is 1.5 seconds slower to 62 mph (100 km/h).
