Americans had been waiting to receive a “baby Benz” for quite some years when the CLA was presented last fall and now, after almost half a year of market presence, the automaker wants to remind us all how affordable their four-door coupe is (for a Mercedes, we might add).
Merc mentions the sub-30k financial side of CLA, but, before we move on to the manner in which this is done, we have to set one thing straight. Yes, the CLA250 does come with a MSRP of $29,900, but this doesn’t include the $925 destination charge, so the 30k milestone was more or less achieved.
Admittedly, the commercial’s message is true. Somehow, the CLA is an innovator, since no other MB model had ever been offered for such a price in America. Sure, the car doesn’t shape hearts into cylinder blocks, gather motorsport trophies or conquer the desert, like some of the Mercedes vehicles shown in the commercial do, but it still does a lot for the brand. This is a true history lesson - from the Rote Sau and the original Gullwing to the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept and the G 63 AMG 6x6, many Mercedes heroes are seen here.
For instance, we recently came across a CLA story that was nothing short of stunning. We’re talking about the fastest taxi in Austria, the CLA 45 AMG that, ironically, we came across while attending a BMW event.
The car is driven by a woman in her 40s, Sabine, who also happens to own a small taxi company. As Sabine, who used to own a 996 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, was hitting 5,000 rpm in Sport mode, you could see the smile engulfing the entire cabin of the CLA AMG. Of course, the Performance Exhaust also played an important role here - Sabine did a great job configuring the car.
Her son is currently studying to become an engineer. His dream? To work in Affalterbach, of course.
